About Halle 424
Halle 424 is a 200-person concert room in Hamburg’s Oberhafen quarter, housed in a former general-cargo shed. Its defining feature is a space designed to change: the stage and scenery are rebuilt for each event, allowing a chamber recital, jazz quartet, or visual-led program to receive its own configuration. The result is an intimate scale inside an industrial shell, close to HafenCity and purpose-built for focused listening.
From cargo handling to a changing stage
Constructed in the 1950s as part of Germany’s largest general-cargo transshipment complex, Halle 424 endured storm surges before its current life. A photography studio used the building for 15 years; in 2014 it opened its industrial interior to artistic projects as Oberhafen developed into a creative quarter. That conversion is the central chapter here: a working port structure became a flexible room for concerts and exhibitions.
In 2018, Halle 424 received an APPLAUS Spielstätte des Jahres award in Category III, with €7,500 attached, for its cross-genre program. Jazz and classical music remain central to its identity, while JazzTracks424 presents national and international artists in the room.
How the room works now
Expect a curator-led program with jazz and classical at its center, alongside chamber-jazz, electronic music, and new-music projects. JazzTracks424 places established acts and newcomers on the same calendar, and the venue’s modular approach accommodates ensembles from solo performers to orchestras. The main event room measures about 300 square metres and holds up to 200 people, with a separate 160-square-metre area available beside it. A post-concert bar-lounge encourages artist-and-audience conversation; step-free access, heating, a kitchen, and accessible facilities support a comfortable small-room experience.
