About Hafenklang

Hafenklang is a 250-capacity live club beside Hamburg’s Fischmarkt, operating in a former Hafenbahn horse stable built around 1860. Its defining trait is a small-scale music room inside a survivor of old Altona: the site housed the city’s first 24-track studio in the 1970s before becoming a cultural and music space. Concerts, DJ nights and occasional open-air events come from an in-house team that curates the program independently.

How a stable became Hafenklang

Hafenklang’s club chapter began in 1996; before that, the 1860-built building served Hamburg’s harbour railway as a stable for tram horses. In the 1970s, Herbert Böhme developed Hafenklang Studio there, installing the city’s first 24-track facility; Udo Lindenberg and Einstürzende Neubauten recorded there. Demolition plans tied to Elbe waterfront redevelopment triggered protests in 1997, and the building was retained for renovation. Construction forced the club into a Große Bergstraße “Exil” from December 2006 through January 2009. In May 2007, the transition tenancy faced an early end; a June agreement kept the club there through year-end. Its January 30, 2009 reopening returned performances to the restored harbour-side structure, adding the Goldener Salon and a bar positioned with sight of the stage.

The room today

Expect compact, mixed-bill nights where punk, ska, rock and metal share the diary with electronic club programming, reggae, hip-hop, dub and dancehall. The performance footprint spreads across two levels: a main concert room plus the first-floor Goldener Salon, which has a smaller stage, with a bar on site. That arrangement gives shows an immediate, close-range feel; the upstairs room supplies a more contained option for bills and parties.
