About Hafenbahnhof

Hafenbahnhof is a compact Hamburg live room whose Friday format welcomes groups of up to 50 people; its broader capacity is unpublished. What sets it apart is the building itself: an old Altona harbour-railway office beside a former track bed that runs east toward the Schellfischtunnel. Café, bar, club and party space share one small waterside address, giving concerts a direct link to the working-harbour fabric.

The station after the trains

The building had served as offices for the Altona harbour railway until the 1970s. Bands used it as rehearsal space in the 1980s; a small kiosk arrived around 2000, then the property sat empty. A discovery in 2005 led to a year of renovation and the May 1, 2006 opening as Hafenbahnhof, a café, bar and live club.

Its survival became a civic issue in 2024, when nearby housing plans raised the prospect of noise conflicts. Altona’s district assembly voted on January 25 to seek planning and contractual protection for concert use, alongside potential soundproofing support. A June 20 council response said the city-backed landlord would be advised to offer the tenant three five-year renewal options; the cultural authority supported long-term retention as a live-music venue. That paper trail gives the small room a concrete stake in a changing waterfront.

Close quarters, open booking

Hafenbahnhof accepts approaches from bands, DJs and agency bookers through its booking contact, and its calendar moves across indie, rock, jazz, pop, electronic, alternative and folk. The operational setup centres on a staffed bar, with drinks supplied by the house; private hires may use the in-house music system, CD players, two vinyl turntables and laptop input. Disco lighting, coloured spots and a mirror ball point to a room made for gigs that slide easily into late-night DJ sets. Saturdays usually serve private events; café hours also keep Sunday daytime in play.
