Gruenspan

Gruenspan is a 900-capacity Hamburg concert club currently housed in Halle D, a converted historic market-hall space in Sternschanze. Its defining feature in 2026 is that split identity: shows continue in the interim room while the club’s original Große Freiheit building receives a major restoration. The temporary venue offers roughly 1,000 square metres and step-free access, giving visiting audiences a sizeable, purpose-equipped room during the move.

A dance hall, a club, a televised set

The story begins in 1889, when the Große Freiheit site opened as the Palmengarten dance salon. Later incarnations included a hippodrome and a cinema before Gruenspan opened there as a music club in 1968. The original building’s exterior carries a 1968 mural by Hamburg artists Dieter Glasmacher and Werner Nöfer; a 1995 restoration retained the club’s columns and gallery. In 1998, R.E.M. played a Rockpalast concert at Gruenspan recorded by Westdeutscher Rundfunk, a specific filmed night in the room’s concert history. The next major chapter arrived in 2026: operations moved to Halle D during extensive work on the Große Freiheit building, including façade, fire-safety and accessibility upgrades. The planned return will bring an expanded main-room capacity of 1,100.

What the present room offers

The current programme ranges across pop, rap, indie, electronic music, folk, alternative and heavy sounds, with concerts, DJs and emerging acts alongside established touring artists. Artists seeking a date can submit directly to the club’s booking team. For audiences, the present-day essentials are practical: Halle D is barrier-free, holds up to 900 guests, and sits in a reconstructed historic hall adapted for modern concert production. A cloakroom operates with limited space, so light travel makes the entry flow easier.
