About Freundlich+Kompetent
Freundlich+Kompetent is a 199-capacity live-music bar in Hamburg’s Barmbek-Süd, set beneath a listed Gothic vault on the ground floor of the Mundsburg Center. Its concert area shares space with a beach-bar look: brick details, sun chairs and a proper bar give gigs the feel of a social night with a band close by. The licensed limit became very real at the new room’s opening, when a packed launch prompted door counting.
A move powered by a farewell crowd
Julius Horn and Julian Jasper-Koch opened Freundlich+Kompetent in 2007 at Gertigstraße 57 in Winterhude, taking on a small former corner pub after training as hotel professionals. A stage formed part of the plan from the start, reflecting the founders’ connection to live music. Their lease expired in September 2014; on September 30, around 1,000 guests came to bid farewell to the original site. The pair then renovated a space on Hamburger Straße that had sat empty for eight years, and Freundlich+Kompetent began operating there in January 2015. Its opening ran for three days and drew such a crowd that officials raised capacity concerns; the team responded by putting a door person with a counter in place. That episode captures the venue’s scale and its draw: a bar-room operation built for full-house energy, with clear limits once the room fills.
The room today
Freundlich+Kompetent presents roughly 120 concerts a year, with hip-hop, pop and R&B among its stated programming focuses, alongside bands, solo artists and DJs. Its booking approach favors developing acts: admission for concerts is free, and management has spoken against pay-to-play arrangements. Tuesday Open Stage nights give established local musicians and newcomers a route onto the bill. Expect a compact, mixed-use room where the bar remains part of the experience, plus an upstairs area with three professional foosball tables.
