About Frau Hedis Tanzkaffee
Frau Hedis Tanzkaffee is Hamburg’s roughly 90-capacity floating venue: a barge with a bar, DJs and bands that circles the harbour before returning to Landungsbrücke 10 on the hour. The distinction is built into the show itself. Concertgoers share a compact room while container cranes, working ships and the Elbe slide past the windows and deck, turning the journey into part of the bill.
A club licensed to move
The Hedi began in 2003, when Andreas Schnoor, founder of the Molotow club, took a harbour-tour launch and converted it into a club room after leaving Molotow. The boat had carried sightseeing passengers; its drinks licence applied to harbour excursions, so the new venue took shape as a moving party and concert boat. Schnoor’s crew removed seating, loaded in beer crates, added plastic flowers and a disco ball, and suspended the DJ booth on thick rubber cords to keep records steady in choppy water.
Its first five years brought a useful marker of the idea’s flexibility. In May 2008, Frau Hedi added afternoon departures for the Vattenfall Lesetage’s “Orkanfahrt,” with five captains telling stories alongside sea-song group Hafennacht e.V. That event placed readings in the same small vessel that hosts dance nights and live sets, a format still central to its identity.
The room on the water
Expect a deliberately mixed booking policy: resident and visiting DJs, live bands, readings, games evenings and guest trips curated by Hamburg clubs all share the schedule. Pop, funk, Balkan beats, electro-swing, house, punk, indie, soul and reggae-oriented nights fit the breadth. Seating rows can come out for a dancefloor; the onboard bar stays close; a covered deck and heated interior extend the season through colder weather. Hourly docking creates a practical rhythm for arrivals and exits, while the harbour view remains the venue’s changing sightline.
