About Fischhalle Harburg
Fischhalle Harburg is a 100-capacity music café and cultural room on Hamburg’s Harburg inland harbour. Its draw is tangible: concerts take place in a 1906 fish hall whose high, exposed timber structure recalls its working-waterfront past. The compact scale suits close-range jazz, songwriter sets and global sounds, while the building also combines a gallery, bistro and offices for local harbour and history groups.
A fish market saved from redevelopment
Built in 1906 as Harburg’s municipal fish hall, the building sold catches from local fishing cutters. In 1908, rising cargo traffic in the Binnenhafen prompted a conversion into the Hafenarbeitervermittlungsstelle, a hiring and wage-payment hall for dockworkers. The function later faded alongside the decline of small break-bulk and bulk operations, leaving the city-owned building to assorted lets, including a vehicle workshop.
A planned office high-rise put the empty hall in line for demolition. A temporary exhibition during the 2010 harbour festival brought the site back into public and political view, according to the Harburg history workshop; Werner Pfeifer developed the cultural-centre plan after seeing the hall during a festival exhibition. He received the keys as owner on April 1, 2016, and Fischhalle opened on May 6, 2017.
Small-scale music, with the harbour alongside
Today the programme is geared to jazz and improvised music, singer-songwriters and global music, with about 25 concerts a year listed by Germany’s Music Information Centre. The room also hosts readings and can be hired for private celebrations, so the schedule stretches beyond gigs. Expect a café-bistro and gallery under the timber roof, band and DJ stage equipment, plus a 40-square-metre waterside sun terrace; those details give it the feel of an all-purpose harbour salon.
