Downtown Bluesclub

Downtown Bluesclub’s Landhaus Walter home is a 300-capacity concert room in Hamburg’s Stadtpark. Its distinguishing feature is the setting: a close-scale live hall inside a red-brick building designed by Fritz Schumacher as a “rural restaurant” beside the park lake in 1912. The surrounding Landhaus operation includes restaurant service and a substantial beer garden, giving a club night an unusually green, park-side frame.

A club finds its park home

The Downtown Bluesclub was founded in 1995, according to Hamburg’s official cultural survey. Its founder, promoter Uwe Mamminga, moved the club into the Neues Landhaus Walter in March 1996; that same year he took over the wider Landhaus operation. The building itself had already lived several lives: Schumacher’s 1912 “rural restaurant” survived the Second World War while the adjacent Stadtpark hall was destroyed, then served at different points as a spa restaurant and steakhouse.

The strongest stress test came during the pandemic. A March 2022 local report recorded a revenue fall of up to 75 percent, cancelled concerts and a protective-shield restructuring process as Mamminga sought investors. The same report described his plan to continue the venue while keeping space for emerging blues players and Hamburg artists. Five years earlier, the Downtown Blues Club received the German Blues Award in the club category, a marker of its standing within the national blues circuit.

The room and its programming

Expect blues and old-time rock ’n’ roll as the core offer, drawing on 1960s music and Mississippi Delta traditions while giving younger performers a route onto the bill. Hamburg’s cultural survey also lists traditional and mainstream jazz, with occasional jazz dates and summer Sunday jazz brunches. The 300-person hall keeps shows compact and stage-focused; outside, Landhaus Walter’s large beer garden and restaurant expand the pre-show and interval options when the weather suits.
