Docks

Docks is a 1,500-capacity concert hall and club at Hamburg’s Spielbudenplatz, with a cinema past built into its identity. Eberhard Knopf presented moving pictures there in 1900, and a 667-seat theatre opened at the current Spielbudenplatz 19 site in September 1906. Today, the venue hosts concerts, parties and specials across electronic music, rock and indie. That history gives a mid-sized gig the scale of a large club room while rooting it in St. Pauli’s early film culture.

From film house to full-room club

The building’s route to Docks began with Eberhard Knopf’s concert-and-automaton house around 1900. Knopf developed the site into a film theatre; later lives included the Eros-Cine-Center in 1965, a Hollywood cinema in 1974 and Knopf’s Music Hall. On September 14, 1988, that music hall became Docks. A 1997 Metallica show left an unusually direct marker: the band called it the “damn best club in the world.” In 2021, pandemic-era façade posters carrying conspiracy material triggered a boycott by major Hamburg promoters. Benny Dianat took over operations on January 1, 2023, beginning a new management chapter after the dispute.

The room today

Docks books a mixed public programme of concerts, club nights and specials, while also taking birthday, corporate and private hires. Its current listings place rap and rock-adjacent shows alongside hard-techno events and themed party bills, in keeping with a range that runs from electronic music through rock and indie. The main hall holds up to 1,500 people and uses modern light and sound design; VIP lounges are available with selected events. This is a large, production-led club room whose atmosphere depends strongly on the night’s promoter and genre.
