Brakula

Brakula in Hamburg-Bramfeld is a community-run concert venue with room for around 200 standing guests in its main hall. Its defining feature is the setting: shows unfold inside a restored 1880 farmhouse, whose original timber beams remain part of the room. The Bramfelder Kulturladen association gives the place its compact name, while the programme places concerts alongside theatre, readings, parties and workshops.

A farmhouse given a second life

The Bramfelder Kulturladen association was founded in 1981. Its eventual home began in 1880 as a two-storey farmhouse on Bramfeld’s village square, then passed through several civic uses: a residence until 1951, a public library during 1959–61, a police station from 1965, and the Bramfelder Sportverein office between 1966 and 1976. A period of vacancy followed. On June 1, 1983, the association moved in under a symbolic-rent arrangement and began its cultural work there. That move, together with the 1983 renovation and conversion, reshaped a former village building into a performance space with a distinctly local purpose. The long sequence of uses gives a gig here a material sense of place: brickwork, timber framing and the scale of an old house frame the audience experience.

Inside the hall

Brakula’s booking approach grows from community-based cultural and educational work, with space also available to local groups, initiatives and courses. For music, the emphasis falls on jazz and improvised music alongside popular forms; the German Music Information Centre lists about 60 jazz and popular-music concerts per year. The 170-square-metre ground-floor hall has a separate side entrance, a six-by-three-metre stage, installed light and sound equipment, a piano, and a counter area with drink refrigeration. Expect an adaptable room: about 100 seats for a listening concert, or roughly 200 standing for a livelier set. The on-site Vistro provides vegan food.
