About Birdland
Birdland is a 150-capacity live-music cellar in Hamburg’s Hoheluft-West, with seating for around 110. Its defining detail is a gallery of hand-painted musician portraits and wall autographs left by artists who have played the compact Gärtnerstraße stage. The scale favors close-range listening: audience and musicians share a low-ceilinged, dark-wood room built for jazz first, while the current program also makes space for adjacent styles.
A Family Club, Paused and Recast
Dieter Reichert opened Birdland in 1985 in the basement of the house where he lived with his family, supported by the Jazz Federation Hamburg. He and his wife Heidi ran it for 28 years, presenting over 4,700 concerts before choosing retirement in June 2013. The farewell jam at the end of that month filled the cellar to capacity, with musicians and regulars crowding in for a final communal session. That apparent ending lasted little over a year: on October 2, 2014, Reichert’s sons Wolff and Ralph reopened the club with Julius Horn and Julian Jasper as partners. The relaunch preserved the Thursday jam while widening the bill beyond straight-ahead jazz.
What the Room Offers Now
Jazz and improvised music remain the center of gravity, alongside funk, R&B, soul and singer-songwriter sets; the club presents roughly 200 concerts a year, plus cabaret and poetry events. Booking is split between Wolff Reichert’s jazz program and Julius Horn’s F&K-presented shows, with Horn selecting acts outside jazz that suit the room. Thursday jams welcome emerging players, and Vocal Sessions place singers with a professional band. Expect dark timber paneling, portraits surrounding the stage, a close audience-performer relationship, and a staffed bar with a drinks-led club atmosphere.
