About MaZ (Magdalenazaal)

MaZ (Magdalenazaal) is a purpose-built Bruges black-box venue with 381 seats or capacity for 650 standing concertgoers. Its defining feature is the retractable grandstand: deployed, it gives theatre, dance and seated shows a focused audience layout; folded away, it opens the room for a club-scale crowd. The hall sits within Cultuurcentrum Brugge’s network, while its flexible format gives pop and rock bills a different scale from the city’s formal concert halls.

A hall on former football ground

MaZ rose on land shaped first by sport. Bruges’s heritage inventory places the hall on grounds released in 1996 from the former Edgard De Smedtstadion, Cercle Brugge’s old home, and credits Jabbeke architect Ivan Decoster with its design. The same inventory records the building as constructed in 2000; CC Brugge’s technical sheet lists 2001 as its construction year. Together, those records point to a turn-of-the-millennium civic build, conceived as a multipurpose room instead of a conversion of an older theatre or industrial shell. That origin still explains the venue’s direct, adaptable character: a 640-square-metre hall designed to alter its audience arrangement, serve performances and accommodate louder events. Its local setting also carries a trace of the stadium in the adjacent Edgard De Smedtplantsoen.

The room in use

CC Brugge programs MaZ for pop and rock concerts, larger appearances and smaller club events, plus young theatre and dance. Brugotta, the cultural centre’s local-talent program, has a home here, and Cactus Muziekcentrum also presents pop and rock concerts in the hall. For a showgoer, the practical appeal lies in the switchable room: the grandstand creates a seated view, while the reduced club configuration keeps smaller bookings contained. A foyer and bar add a social base before and after the set.
