About Zimmer 16

Zimmer 16 is a 60-seat, 90-standing-room Kleinkunstbühne in Berlin’s Pankow district, where the entire venue measures 120 square metres and the stage itself measures 16. That scale is the point: performers play at immediate range, with music sharing the bill with theatre, comedy, film and visual-art exhibitions. The building’s ground floor previously housed a neighbourhood cinema, giving this compact concert room an unusually long entertainment lineage.

A cinema’s afterlife

Florastraße 16 entered public entertainment in 1910, when Otto Noll opened a 116-seat cinematograph theatre in the newly built apartment house. The operation expanded in 1913, changed hands and names through the 1920s, became the Fortuna-Lichtspiele in 1928, and received Klangfilm sound equipment in 1933. Cinema listings place its run through the 1960s, after which the ground floor moved into cultural use.

In 1990, the rooms became home to the Homunkulus puppet theatre. MIKADO e.V. later took them on for Zimmer 16, a project whose association was founded in 2002; local reporting also dates the venue’s opening to that year. The present operation remains volunteer-led: association members handle the door, bar and technical work, while membership fees, donations, event income and occasional public funding support the programme.

How the room works

Expect a deliberately broad booking policy: singer-songwriters, blues, jazz, folk, poetry and open stages sit alongside experimental music, dance, comedy and children’s events. MIZ lists about 200 concerts a year with blues, jazz and folk as musical focal points, while the venue describes bills that pair established performers with emerging artists. Seating suits attentive shows; the 90-person standing setup creates a tighter concert feel. A volunteer-run bar operates inside the room, and paintings and photography remain part of the surroundings.
