About Zig Zag Jazz Club

Zig Zag Jazz Club in Berlin’s Friedenau district holds 90 people, a scale that puts performers close to the small tables, floor lamps and retro sofas. Founded in 2015, the club presents about 250 concerts annually, pairing Berlin players with touring artists across a broad jazz frame. Expect straight-ahead jazz alongside improvised music, swing, Latin, soul, funk and fusion; the room’s regular Tuesday jam gives its calendar a local pulse between headline sets.

A decade of keeping the doors open

Zig Zag opened in 2015. Its 2025 tenth-birthday concert gathered musicians described by the club as regulars who had helped shape its sound and spirit, making the anniversary a useful measure of how quickly the venue established a recurring cast within Berlin’s jazz community. The club also received Initiative Musik’s Spielstättenprogramm award in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021, a run recorded on its own site.

The harder chapter arrived with the pandemic. In June 2024, Tagesspiegel reported that the Hauptstraße club had survived the Covid period with support from audiences and musicians. That autumn, management planned to keep the original room operating at half strength and half volume while developing a summer base elsewhere. The 2025 anniversary and the club’s current programme show the Hauptstraße room continuing as an active venue.

Jazz remains the center of gravity, with an artistic programme spanning many of its styles plus improvised music and jams. Zig Zag is a seated, lounge-like club: compact tables and soft furnishings favor attentive listening, while the bar serves long drinks, beer, wine and cocktails. The 90-person limit makes the stage feel near from throughout the room, and the weekly jam offers an easy entry point for listeners drawn to spontaneous interplay as much as planned sets.
