About Umspannwerk Ost

Umspannwerk Ost is a 300-capacity standing venue in Berlin-Friedrichshain, set inside a three-storey former transformer station at Palisadenstraße 48. Its distinguishing feature comes built in: the original machine-hall scale survives in a listed industrial shell, with steel structure, brickwork and tall steel-and-glass gates carrying the room’s old utility purpose into live events. The result feels closer to a converted civic machine than a purpose-built club, while remaining small enough for a compact crowd.

Power station, production floor, culture house

Architect Oskar Springmann designed the building in 1899–1900, and Berliner Elektrizitätswerke AG opened it in 1900 as a transformer and converter station supplying the surrounding Friedrichshain streets. The hall expanded during the 1920s; wartime destruction removed those additions, and the surviving building later housed VEB Stanzbleche Berlin through the late 1980s before serving as a plant-construction company’s production and office base through the 1990s.

A 1999 renovation converted the protected building into a low-energy cultural and conference centre with support from the European Union and Berlin’s Senate administration. April 2000 brought its reopening with a restaurant, music club, theatre and offices. That sequence gives a show here an unusually legible setting: heavy electrical infrastructure gave way to factory work, then to a mixed-use performance space without erasing the building’s working-frame proportions.

The room today

Today, Umspannwerk Ost works as a flexible event hire and public-performance site: the restaurant, theatre activity and lower-level club share the building, while private parties, company events, readings, comedy and creative formats form part of its booking offer. The current concert calendar leans toward electronic and DJ-led bills. Expect a two-level setup, with restaurant space across two floors and a lower club area; the full venue is listed for up to 200 seated or 300 standing guests. In-house catering, a sound system, DJ setup, dance floor and artist dressing room make the room practical for promoter-led nights.
