St. Marienkirche

St. Marienkirche in Berlin is a 750-seat church-concert room whose defining feature is its Wagner/Kern organ: a 1999 rebuild following Joachim Wagner’s 1720–22 scheme. Begun around 1270 as the parish church for medieval Berlin’s Neustadt, this three-aisled brick-Gothic hall now places organ recitals, choral works and orchestral concerts inside one of the city’s surviving medieval interiors. Fixed pews give performances a formal, concentrated listening setup.

A church remade by fire, baroque design and organ craft

Construction began around 1270, with the first secure documentary mention arriving in 1294. A city fire in 1380 badly damaged St. Marien; the choir vaults and the west end of the nave date from its rebuilding. The church’s next major change came in the baroque era, when an organ, altar and Andreas Schlüter pulpit reshaped the Gothic building for preaching; the transverse benches along the south side still show that earlier arrangement.

Its concert identity concentrates in the organ. The 40-stop instrument was accepted on May 11, 1723, then repeatedly altered across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Severe damage during the winter of 1996 made another repair cycle impractical, prompting the 1999 commission for a new instrument by Daniel Kern & Fils. The resulting organ reconstructs Wagner’s 40 registers while adding five stops and a modern playing range for present-day choral and instrumental work.

The room today

Programming leans decisively toward organ, sacred choral and classical orchestral music: the 2026 schedule includes weekly 20-minute organ sessions, the Berliner Orgelsommer, Bach, Brahms and candlelit concerts. External hires receive individual content review, while the venue also hosts readings and panel discussions. The barrier-free, 1,000-square-metre church hall has 750 fixed bench seats, with space for up to 100 additional chairs; an under-gallery area accommodates standing receptions for up to 80 people.
