About Speiches Rock- und Blueskneipe

Speiches Rock- und Blueskneipe is a small-capacity live-music pub in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg, with performers set on a small stage close to the room. Its distinguishing feature is the house rule that turns a gig into a bar-room encounter: admission is free, while the space remains a smoking pub. Founder Jörg “Speiche” Schütze brought his connection to DDR blues band Monokel into the place, giving its music-first character a precise local lineage.

A rehearsal room with a second life

Schütze opened Speiches in 1992 inside Monokel’s former rehearsal room on Raumerstraße, after the post-reunification concert market cut attendance for former DDR bands. He had played bass for Monokel, a group shaped in East Berlin’s blues culture, and redirected that working room into a pub where musicians could keep meeting audiences at close range. A long-form interview at the bar captures its working life: Rockradio’s board met at nearby tables while musicians came in to greet friends and arrange gigs. The story gained a hard date on May 31, 2020, when Schütze died in Berlin after two decades running his Helmholtzplatz music bar. The room remains tied to that founder’s practical idea of an accessible musicians’ meeting point.

Close quarters, roots-minded bills

Speiches programs free-entry shows with blues and acoustic rock at the center, plus soul, folk, jazz and country. Friday and Saturday bring live bands in mostly small line-ups; Sundays move through chanson, swing and ragtime, while Tuesdays add Rockradio artist interviews and live concert segments. Expect a compact, seated pub setup: a small stage, bar service and billiards share the room. The appeal lies in physical proximity, with performers close enough for a direct, informal set instead of a distant club-floor experience.
