About Silent Green

Silent Green in Berlin’s Wedding district is a cultural campus whose concert centre, the Kuppelhalle, holds up to 400 standing. The draw is architectural: shows unfold beneath a 17-metre cupola in the former central mourning hall of Berlin’s first crematorium. Its octagonal plan, pyramid-shaped mansard roof and restored terrazzo floor give a performance an unusually formal frame, suited to attentive listening as much as a conventional night out.

A crematorium remade

The building rose between 1909 and 1910 on the grounds of a municipal cemetery, with cremations authorised in 1911 and the site reopening under municipal administration in 1912. Berlin’s first crematorium, it placed an octagonal mourning hall at its centre and columbaria in the adjoining wings. The city closed the facility in 2002 after expanding other crematoria; the empty, protected complex then went up for sale. Silent Green secured the contract in early 2013 and began a renovation shaped with Berlin’s heritage authorities. Restoration returned major details to view, including the central hall’s terrazzo floor, former altar space, prayer alcove and hundreds of urn compartments. Tenants moved in during 2014, while the first cultural events arrived across 2014 and 2015. The result keeps the crematorium’s geometry and material presence in the foreground while giving it a wholly different public use.

The room in practice

Silent Green books cross-disciplinary cultural work: concerts sit beside readings, film screenings, festivals, talks and visual-art projects, with resident organisations adding music, moving-image and media-art activity to the campus. The Kuppelhalle offers flexible stage and seating configurations, so a show can range from a seated presentation to a 400-person standing concert. Its 17-metre dome, octagonal floor and upper gallery make the room itself part of the experience. The hall is barrier-free accessible and connects directly to MARS Café & Bar, useful for a pre-show drink or a pause between sets.
