Quasimodo

Quasimodo is a 350-capacity live club beneath Berlin’s Delphi Filmpalast, sharing its Kantstraße building with the Vagantenbühne theatre. Its distinguishing feature is the entry: stone steps descend into a black-walled basement room, giving a 350-person crowd close range of the stage. Jazz anchors the programme, with blues, soul, funk, rock and pop also on the bill. The club’s location within a cinema-and-theatre complex gives a show night a distinct City West setting.

A student pub, recast for live music

Quasimodo took its present form in 1975, when Genoa-born Giorgio Carioti assumed control of a student pub in the historic Delphi complex, renamed it, and centered the programme on live music. The basement had hosted celebrations for decades, while jazz had been gaining ground there since the late 1960s. Carioti’s conversion supplied the room with a clear musical identity and a home beneath the film palace.

In May 1987, Prince followed a Deutschlandhalle concert with an after-hours Quasimodo appearance, a compact episode that suits a basement club built for close contact. Management shifted again in 2017, when Channel Music began operating Quasimodo; the 2019 Applaus venue-programme awards then named it Venue of the Year. Those changes preserved a jazz-rooted room while providing a framework for a broader live programme.

The room and the bill

Quasimodo’s current booking frame is jazz and improvised music alongside popular music, with about 200 concerts annually plus cultural events outside the concert format. Expect a mixed live bill: jazz remains central, with blues, rock, soul and funk firmly represented. The 350-capacity club occupies the basement, with black walls and warm lighting; a terrace linked directly to the Bar Q provides an upstairs-or-outdoors option on suitable evenings. For concertgoers, the small scale and cellar layout keep the focus on proximity between audience and performer.
