Prachtwerk

Prachtwerk is a 250-capacity café-bar and concert room in Berlin’s Neukölln, set inside a former factory building. Its 199-square-metre main hall shifts easily between a 150-seat theatre layout, dinner seating and a standing crowd, giving acoustic sets and full-band bills the same close-range scale. The regular Wednesday Open Stage supplies a concrete distinction: emerging performers use the same staged room as touring artists, with professional sound and lighting.

A café built for the stage

Prachtwerk opened in February 2014 under proprietor John Hasler, after Hasler and his wife had tested the idea through recurring living-room concerts following their move from the United States to Berlin. The venue took shape as a music café in a former factory building, with open-mic nights and concerts at its core from the start. A November 2014 report found around 120 people in the room for New Zealand duo French for Rabbits, whose set blended pop with folk and jazz elements; the scene paired attentive listeners at the front with bar conversation at the back. In 2018, reporting on Prachtwerk’s early financial ties to the US evangelical National Community Church drew public scrutiny. The church withdrew as shareholder soon after that coverage, leaving Hasler as sole shareholder of the operating company, according to a 2025 Tagesspiegel investigation.

The room now

Prachtwerk’s booking model mixes programmed concerts, its Wednesday Open Stage and private hires, so the calendar can move between artist showcases and community-led bills. Its musical center is close-range, song-led performance: early programming included folk- and jazz-tinged pop, while the venue currently advertises live music almost daily. High ceilings and bay windows keep the industrial main hall bright by day; at showtime, a 17-square-metre stage, bar, backstage area and adaptable seating make it suited to seated listening rooms as well as 250-person standing shows.
