Ost

Ost is a 600-capacity club in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district, housed in the former power station of the historic Osthafen complex. Its defining feature is the industrial setting: a compact web of floors, corridors and stairwells behind the old riverside façade, with a Pioneer Pro Audio system retained for the club’s 2017 launch. The result is a purposefully physical room for electronic music, close to the Spree and geared toward late-night immersion.

A power station’s second life

The building belongs to Osthafen, Berlin’s municipal inland port, whose quays, warehouses and infrastructure were constructed between 1907 and 1913 under city planning director Friedrich Krause and his team. The power-station building at Alt-Stralau 1–2 survived as part of the protected harbour ensemble, long after cargo handling left the waterfront.

Before Ost, the site housed Magdalena. Early in 2017, Magdalena’s team was locked out amid a dispute involving an insolvency administrator; the property later passed to Matrix owners and underwent conversion as 1 Stralau. Ost opened on November 4, 2017, with a Dred Records launch night featuring Vakula, LA-4A, John Osborn and Jennifer Touch. That opening gave the former event space a defined club identity, built around its existing sound system and a 330-square-metre ground-floor club area.

The room now

Ost’s booking leans toward DJ-led techno and house, with experimental electronic bills also part of the program. Berlin’s official club guide describes a large dancefloor in a former industrial hall; visitBerlin highlights multiple areas joined by narrow passages and stairwells. Expect a raw, minimalist setting, high-impact sound and shifting pockets of activity instead of a single straight-through room. A no-photo policy supports a less performative dancefloor, and queer-focused events appear regularly on the calendar.
