Monarch in Kreuzberg is a compact, 150-capacity room built for close-range gigs and late club sets. Its defining feature is the panoramic window looking straight across Kottbusser Tor: a hard-edged Berlin streetscape behind the crowd, with the first-floor setting giving the club the feel of a bar suspended above the intersection. The room suits listeners who value proximity and atmosphere over distance from the stage.

A record that starts before its listed opening

Monarch’s early timeline carries a useful wrinkle. A current nightlife listing gives December 8, 2010 as its opening date, yet a Ver.di publication advertised a June 14, 2007 discussion at “Bar Monarch” at Skalitzer Straße 134. The documented record therefore places activity at this address several years earlier, while the precise opening or relaunch story remains unclear in published sources.

Its archive also shows the room serving ideas as readily as dance floors. In June 2009, Hunee and Finn Johannsen played the disco night La Grotta here. On September 7, 2011, CTM and TodaysArt used Monarch for an ICAS Suite opening night with Conforce, 2562 and Peter Van Hoesen, linking the small Kreuzberg venue to Berlin Music Week’s experimental electronic programme.

The room today

Monarch books across formats: live concerts, readings and parties appear alongside DJ-led nights. The musical center of gravity runs through electronic music, soul, disco, house and indie-leaning live bills, with hip-hop and rock shows also on the calendar. Expect a first-floor bar-club layout with a central bar, a small performance area and seating along the window line; the broad Kotti view is its strongest sightline.
