Metropol

Metropol is a 1,300-capacity concert and event room on Berlin’s Nollendorfplatz. Its draw is a full-scale historic theatre interior pressed into club-sized encounters: a 14-metre main hall, twelve columns, Murano-glass chandeliers, and two galleries that wrap the floor. The building’s public-facing operation combines concerts, selected parties and event hires, so the character can shift radically with the bill.

A theatre remade, then renamed

Completed in 1906 as the Neues Schauspielhaus by Boswau & Knauer, this was built as a theatre and concert hall: the theatre held 1,108 seats and the mahogany-clad Mozartsaal occupied the front section. The Mozartsaal became a cinema in 1911, while Erwin Piscator reopened the theatre in 1927 as the Theater am Nollendorfplatz, using what the venue describes as Europe’s most advanced stage of the day. A later identity turn proved much shorter. Architect Hans Kollhoff’s Goya dining-and-dance club opened here on December 1, 2005, after a shareholder-funded €7.5 million conversion; Goya filed for insolvency on March 3, 2006 and closed for good that May. The house closed again in 2014, then returned to the Metropol name in autumn 2019 as a concert, party and event space.

How the room plays

Concerts sit alongside selected parties and corporate-event work, with separate booking contacts for concert-and-party and corporate programmes. The present calendar brings indie-pop, R&B, German rap and participatory party shows into the same room, making stylistic range the operating principle. For sightlines, aim for the galleries: broad staircases lead to two balcony levels, each with a bar; the second has a rear lounge above the stage. The ground-level foyer has its own circular bar, while the main hall carries the stage, bars and built-in light-and-sound system.
