About Madame Claude

Madame Claude is a roughly 40-capacity concert bar in Berlin’s Kreuzberg-Schlesisches Tor quarter, built for close-range sets and late DJ handoffs. Its calling card is a main room staged as an upside-down apartment: chairs, tables and lamps hang overhead, while the usable floor sits below. That visual joke gives every arrival a little disorientation; the compact scale keeps the audience near the performers.

Three friends, a former brothel, and a ceiling full of furniture

The venue opened in 2008, after three French friends left jobs in Paris, Madrid and London, gathered in Berlin, and began presenting music shows despite arriving without German. They made their home in a former brothel near the former Berlin Wall, then turned a childhood idea—playing in a flat flipped upside down—into the room’s permanent design. The conversion supplies a tangible setting for a programme that favors discovery over polished spectacle.

Its defining recurring fixture is Experimontag, the Monday experimental-music series. Tag der Clubkultur identifies it alongside an open mic and music quiz as part of the weekly rhythm, while the venue’s current listings continue to pair concerts with DJ sets and community events. Madame Claude’s own roll call reaches from Ariel Pink and The Black Lips to Mac DeMarco, Xiu Xiu and Shonen Knife, evidence of a long-running small-room appetite for indie, left-field pop, noise and art-minded touring acts.

How the room works now

Expect a bar-first, small-room format with live acts and DJs woven through the week. Monday’s Experimontag offers the clearest route into experimental sound; open-mic nights widen the bill, and DJ sets carry evenings onward after concerts. Booking enquiries run directly through the venue, suggesting an active independent programme. Physically, this is a sequence of intimate rooms, nooks and corridors, with the inverted drinking room as the focal point; arrive early for limited-capacity events and a better spot near the action.
