About Lido

Lido is a 600-capacity concert club in Berlin’s Wrangelkiez, operating in a former cinema on the Cuvrystraße–Schlesische Straße corner. Its strongest calling card is cinema-scale detail inside a standing-room show space: the technical brief recommends 550 for a dynamic crowd, while vintage chandeliers hang above the wooden concert-hall floor. Its prior life also carried a specific Cold War role, as a border cinema drawing East Berliners to West German films.

Cinema at the border

In 1951, cinema operator Gerhard Kollat opened Lido-Lichtspiele in a purpose-built theater designed by Valerian Wehn. The 521-seat house sat close to the sector boundary and offered discounted screenings to East Berlin visitors; the Wall’s construction on August 13, 1961 cut that audience off. The cinema closed in 1966, then became the rock-and-roll club Westside in 1967 before the Schaubühne used it as rehearsal space during the 1980s.

A 2006 conversion brought music back. Stefan “Spencer” Theile began operating the site in March 2006 and opened it with British Music Week pop concerts on May 19; Lido places its wider reopening in May, after the old property’s revitalisation. The current club reclaimed the cinema’s Lido name while turning the space into a concert and party venue.

The room now

Show selection moves across live concerts, indie parties, 80s nights, and rock, indie, electro, and pop, making Lido a mixed concert-and-club booking room instead of a single-scene specialist. Expect a standing audience around the permanent 96-centimeter stage. The official venue document lists a 600 maximum and preserves the chandeliered ceiling and wooden floor; Berlin’s city guide also lists accessibility and a casual dress code.
