About Kunstfabrik Schlot

Kunstfabrik Schlot is a 150-capacity jazz club in Berlin-Mitte, tucked into the Edison-Höfe basement near Nordbahnhof. Its distinguishing feature is scale with cellar character: iron, stone and wood surround a stage built to take big bands, while the programme stays close to a working local scene. The club presents around 320 jazz concerts each year, giving its calendar the density of a regular listening room, with space for younger players alongside established ensembles.

A chimney, a move, a bigger stage

Schlot began in March 1993 in the rear courtyard of Kastanienallee 29, at Prenzlauer Berg’s western edge. Founders Thorsten Hoffmann and Frank Delenschke opened a small live stage with puppet theatre, then added a regular jazz jam; the chimney visible beyond the windows supplied the name. The first room covered 65 square metres. Stefan Berker and John Kunkeler took charge in 1996, when a legal club future on Kastanienallee had reached a dead end. They rebuilt underground in the Edison-Höfe, a Mitte redevelopment, and reopened Schlot on April 5, 2000. The new guest room expanded to 165 square metres and added a stage suited to large jazz ensembles. The move turned a precarious courtyard stage into an ongoing cellar venue with room for bands and audiences alike.

What the room offers now

Expect jazz and improvised music first, alongside blues, swing, cabaret and literary events. Booking favors Berlin-based artists, welcomes skilled performers, and keeps international connections in play; music-school partnerships and youth concerts make artist development part of the club’s working pattern. Inside, the basement setting combines iron, stone and wood, with a stage sized for big bands. Reserve tickets for applicable shows; free events use first-come seating. Doors generally open one hour before the programme begins.
