About Kulturhaus Spandau
Kulturhaus Spandau is a 144-capacity concert and performance room in Berlin’s Altstadt Spandau, housed in a protected former electricity-conversion station. Its red-velvet theatre is arranged across two levels, with a balcony above the main floor; the small scale keeps performers close and gives the room consistently clear views. A gallery, cinema and Café & Bistro Unvernunft share the building, so a show lands within a multi-room municipal arts house.
A power station becomes a public stage
The building began in 1928–30 as the Gleichrichterwerk Spandau, designed by Hans Heinrich Müller for Berliner Städtische Elektrizitätswerke AG. It converted incoming electricity into direct current for Berlin’s tram network, with offices and technical equipment set behind a facade tailored to Spandau’s historic centre. The city’s heritage database records conversion work in 1987 and 1990.
The cultural story started earlier. A citizens’ initiative set the project in motion in 1982, and the house marked its 40th anniversary in 2024, dating its cultural beginning to 1984. Those dates trace a useful distinction: grassroots organising and programming came first, followed by the documented building conversion. The result remains unusually literal adaptive reuse: a former power facility now carries theatre, cinema, dance, exhibitions and intimate live music through four floors.
The room today
Programming comes through Spandau Borough Council in cooperation with FKS Freunde Kulturhaus Spandau e.V. and MAGMA Theater Spandau e.V.; the in-house team also welcomes artist applications. Concerts sit alongside theatre, cabaret, comedy and children’s programming, with operetta, local ensembles and small-scale concert bills fitting the seated format. The main theatre’s fixed chairs and balcony make this a close-range listening room, with wheelchair spaces available on the upper level. Larger-format concerts shift to the Gothic Hall at the Citadel, while the in-house café-bistro supplies an easy pre-show stop.
