Klunkerkranich

Klunkerkranich is a Berlin rooftop venue with a listed concert capacity of 100, set on the upper parking deck of Neukölln Arcaden in Neukölln. Its defining feature is the setting: a cultural garden built above a shopping-centre car park, where open-air views across the city share space with concerts, DJ sessions and club nights. The result feels closer to a loose collection of small rooms and outdoor corners than a conventional single-hall venue.

A car park becomes a cultural roof

Klunkerkranich began in 2013 as a communal cultural-garden project on the roof of Neukölln Arcaden. The site turned a sealed parking deck into a garden, bar and event space; an early project account records over 2,500 square metres of rooftop area and a build using over 4,000 square metres of wood. The venue’s roots reach back to 2009, when promoter Dorian Mazurek staged a video shoot that became an open-air party on the previously unused top deck. That night led to plans for a culture roof under the name MS Neukölln and a lease with the parking operator.

Its early collective spirit also met a public rupture. In October 2015, local outlet neukoellner.net reported that founders Dorle Martinek and Dorian Mazurek were in Berlin regional court over their collaboration in Klunkerkranich. The case put the project’s origin story—friends, volunteer labour, urban gardening and a repurposed roof—under an unusually clear spotlight.

The room today

Klunkerkranich programs live concerts, performances, club nights and DJ sessions, giving space to emerging artists and young promoters alongside established electronic acts. Electronic music anchors the late programme: techno, house, downtempo and disco lead the main floor, Hinter den Alpen, one parking deck above the garden. For live shows and jams, the Wohnzimmer supplies a small stage, bar-floor atmosphere, old sofas and tucked-away seating. Outside, the Ostflügel open-air area joined the site in 2022, extending the rooftop’s garden-and-dancefloor layout.
