About Kater Blau

Kater Blau is the historic name of the Berlin club now presented as Kater, a 201–500-person electronic-music room at Holzmarkt 25 on the Spree. Its defining asset is a riverside club compound created by the same collective whose earlier Bar 25 shaped this stretch of Friedrichshain: indoor floors carry the late set, while a broad outdoor area of benches, sofas and a moored boat gives daylight sets a distinct setting.

A club rebuilt beside the Spree

Bar 25 opened on the same riverbank in 2003, establishing the starting point for the later Kater operation. After Bar 25 closed, its operators built Kater Holzig nearby in a former soap factory; Kater Blau arrived in summer 2014 beside the original site, as part of the cooperative Holzmarkt 25 quarter. That route gives Kater a continuous team-and-site story, with its present club growing directly from two earlier venues. Berlin’s soundproofing fund later backed work in the Acid Bogen and Hopper rooms after surrounding construction brought neighbour complaints, tighter environmental demands and a closure threat from the construction department. The project added low-frequency controls and acoustic measures to both spaces. In August 2025, Kater Blau’s public identity shifted to Kater, while the club remained at Holzmarktstraße 25.

How the room works now

Kater’s program centers on house, techno and adjacent electronic styles, with resident-led Katernacht weekends, guest-curated takeovers and live or hybrid sets distributed between Hopper and Acid Bogen. The official calendar also uses the outdoor Katergarten for early-evening local-DJ sessions and The Funky Chicken Club for a Tuesday vinyl bill with live vocals. Expect two principal indoor floors, extra rooms on larger bills, and a sizable Spree-side exterior; the venue’s awareness policy frames the room as a safer space.
