About Kantine am Berghain
Kantine am Berghain is Berlin’s approximately 200-person concert room in the former canteen at the western edge of the Friedrichshain combined heat-and-power plant. Separate from Berghain’s main rooms, it places live shows beside Bierhof Rüdersdorf, the seasonal beer garden on the site. Its distinguishing proposition is scale: an industrial complex associated with marathon club culture, reduced here to a compact floor built for close-range sets, parties and occasional film programs.
A canteen’s second act
The parent power station took shape in 1952–55: first its boiler house, then the turbine and generator building. At the site’s western corner, the canteen survives as the separate Kantine am Berghain, a live-concert and party space. The venue’s documentary trail gives its history a useful musical scale. An official August 2011 Berghain flyer advertised a Kantine event on August 26; a February 2012 programme billed an Artificial Mysteries concert there. In April 2016, English singer NAO played the room, recalled in Berghain’s November 2016 flyer. These records frame Kantine as a regular small-room outlet inside a larger club complex, with concerts sitting alongside club nights.
The bill and the room
Kantine’s programming crosses avant-garde rock, experimental electronic music, disco, house, pop, indie rock and black metal; it also hosts parties and cultural events. The current official diary supports the range: screenings centered on music, body and identity share the schedule with Evening Elephants, Love Spells, Kreidler, Rostam and Mykki Blanco. Expect a main floor for around 200, plus a small lounge described as old-English in style; outdoors, Bierhof Rüdersdorf supplies a seasonal beer-garden setting with an open fireplace. Concerts begin early in the evening on the current calendar, creating a contained, artist-forward alternative to Berghain’s late-night scale.
