About Kallasch&

Kallasch& is a small-capacity concert bar in Berlin’s Moabit district, with its public capacity undisclosed. Its distinguishing feature hangs on the wall: pieces of the original sign from Kallasch & Jonas, a neighborhood catering-supply business active from 1919 to 2007, give the venue its name. The setting is a renovated corner pub opposite the ZK/U arts centre, and its scale suits audience-first sets within arm’s reach of the bar.

A festival finds a permanent room

Kallasch& opened in summer 2014, when Dominik Borrmann, Luisa Traumann and Simon Ebser converted a worn corner pub into the Moabiter Barprojekt. The trio came out of the neighborhood music festival Musique Maudite and rebuilt the site around concerts and cultural events. Unionstraße 2 had already sat empty for three years after the former Oldenburger Eck closed, leaving the founders with a stripped-back room to remake. In October 2014, a local report caught the new place in its opening stretch: a cheap-beer corner Kneipe with live music that listeners could actually hear, plus a patio facing the former station building occupied by ZK/U. Kallasch& marked its tenth anniversary in 2024, a useful measure of how long this self-made format has lasted.

The room and its rhythm

The booking approach is broad, local and community-minded: Saturday concerts sit beside Thursday events, a monthly Eagel Slam 1000, Diary Slam sessions, open mics and music quizzes. Live music shares the bill with spoken-word and participatory nights, so a show here feels like one strand of a bar-wide program. The venue says concerts and the great majority of events are free. Inside, expect a compact back-room setup, mismatched furniture and tight, close-range sightlines; the recurring slam is described as a full, sweaty room. The bar and outdoor terrace carry the social side of the night.
