Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche

Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche is a seated Berlin concert setting with capacity for over 700 people. Its defining feature is architectural: Egon Eiermann’s 1961 octagonal church, enclosed by blue glass walls created by Gabriel Loire, sits alongside the surviving tower of the earlier church destroyed in wartime. A concert here carries the visual tension of a modern sanctuary and a preserved ruin, with the building itself central to the experience.

A tower retained, a new church built

The first Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche was built from 1891 to 1895, driven by the Evangelical Church Building Association and Kaiser Wilhelm II as a memorial to Wilhelm I; Franz Heinrich Schwechten designed the grand neo-Romanesque church. Bombing in 1943 left the main tower and parts of the west front amid the destruction of the surrounding district.

Its postwar future became a prolonged civic and political argument. Plans for a historical reconstruction gave way to a limited 1956 competition; Egon Eiermann won in 1957, then revised his design in 1957–58 after public pressure secured the ruined tower’s place in the scheme. The new church opened on 17 December 1961, with foyer and chapel completed in 1963. That decision created the present concert setting: a working church gathered around a visible record of the war.

What the room programmes now

Programming is curated through the church’s music ministry and partner institutions. Organ and choral vespers, Bach cantata services, piano recitals, instrumental ensembles, international choirs and jazz concerts form the core, while the University of the Arts Berlin partners on the International Organ Improvisation Festival. Since 2009, the summer InSpirit series has paired international jazz artists with a spiritual frame; the International Organ Summer runs from July to September. Expect a formal seated layout in a 35-metre-wide, 20.5-metre-high octagon. A 2.45-metre passage between the double walls adds sound isolation, and the blue glass keeps the room visually distinctive throughout a performance.
