About Insel Berlin

Insel Berlin in Alt-Treptow operates at two scales: its ground-floor Theaterdeck holds about 100 people for a standing concert, while the riverside Inselgarten can host 100–250. The distinguishing feature arrives before the first chord: the venue occupies part of Insel der Jugend, reached from Treptower Park across the Abteibrücke, with the Spree running alongside its garden and decks.

An island made for gatherings

The story begins with the island itself. For Berlin’s 1896 Gewerbeausstellung, a restaurant styled as a Scottish abbey ruin gave the former reed-covered site its Abteiinsel name. That building burned in 1914; after Neukölln bought the island in 1913, the bridge project reshaped its entrance, producing an early German reinforced-concrete arch crossing. In 1949, the place became Insel der Jugend, and the DDR-era site developed as a meeting point for young people, with concerts, dances and summer open-air events. The present venue arrived in 2010, when kulturALARM e.V., founded in 2008, took on the former youth-club house and developed it as Kulturhaus Insel Berlin. The thread from youth clubhouse to concert space remains unusually direct.

The room today

Booking sits with kulturALARM, which invites cultural promoters and artists to propose events. Its stated musical focus is experimental, ambitious popular music and emerging artists, alongside festivals, readings, workshops and interdisciplinary projects. For gigs, the 67-square-metre Theaterdeck supplies a fixed stage, five-metre ceiling, wood floor, installed sound and lighting, plus barrier-reduced garden access. Upstairs, the Sonnendeck adds a bar, DJ booth, 7,500-watt Kirsch Audio system and a roof terrace, giving smaller dance-led nights a separate, elevated setting.
