Heimathafen Neukölln

Heimathafen Neukölln is a Berlin concert and performance house in the Saalbau Neukölln, with room for up to 800 people standing and 400 in theatre seating. Its distinction is scale with theatrical detail: a nineteenth-century ballroom now carries gigs beneath a 10-by-10-metre stage, while concerts share the building with cabaret, plays, talks and readings. Expect a proper hall and the cultural breadth of a neighbourhood institution instead of club-room intimacy.

A ballroom rebuilt for its district

Bohemian-born publican Ludwig Niesigk built the site in Rixdorf in 1875, combining an inn, salon and ballroom as Niesigk’s Salon. The building gained a professional theatre in 1905 and became the Neuköllner Theater-Lichtspiele cinema in 1915. In 1941, it was used in the Nazi confiscation of Jewish property following deportations, a history recorded by the venue itself. The sharper break arrived in 1968, when police closed the Saalbau because of structural defects; the building stood empty and deteriorated until a 1986 renovation decision and a 1990 handover to Neukölln’s culture office. In 2009, the Heimathafen collective took the lease with an accessible-culture remit, bringing contemporary Volkstheater, music and public conversation into a room already shaped by theatre, cinema and concert use.

The room at showtime

Programming is multi-format, with a dedicated concert operation alongside in-house theatre, revue, spoken-word and discussion events. Music bills favour songwriter-led sets, indie-pop and rock, folk-leaning artists and visiting international acts; Wallis Bird, Benjamin Clementine, Jamie Cullum and The Streets appear among the venue’s documented concert alumni. The main room shifts between 400 rows of seats and an 800-capacity standing floor. Café Rix, with gilded plaster ceilings and mirrors, provides the period flourish beside the auditorium, while an L’Acoustics PA and a 99 dB LAeq, 30-minute sound limit shape the live setup.
