Gretchen

Gretchen is a live-music club in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district, listed in the 501–1,000-place capacity range. Its draw begins with the shell: an 1854 heritage building on the Dragonerareal, built as stables for the Prussian 1st Guards Dragoon Regiment of Queen Victoria. The former riding stable gives the club a rare architectural frame for bills that move freely between concerts and late club sets.

The club born from a licensing battle

Pamela Schobeß and Lars Döring opened Gretchen in September 2011 after searching for an additional base beyond their Prenzlauer Berg club, Icon. In 2010, Pankow officials sought to withdraw Icon’s licence after neighbour complaints; public support and district politicians helped reverse that move. Gretchen still arrived because Icon had become too small for some concert bookings. The pair converted the old stables over roughly three months, revealing decorative work on columns beneath later cladding; SSC Group joined them as an operating partner. The opening night brought Paris electronic label Ed Banger, announcing an intention to combine live bills and dance nights. Two weeks later, on October 14, 2011, Plaid played with Cloud Boat and James Yuill: a sharply chosen early program that placed intricate electronic music, dubstep and folktronica in the new main room.

A flexible room for live bills

Gretchen’s present booking policy puts originality and artistic quality ahead of commercial success, offering slots to established national and international artists alongside newcomers, with stated support for FLINTA*, LGBTIQ*, POC and other marginalized communities. The calendar spans electronic music, hip-hop, world music, jazz, soul and adjacent hybrids. Expect two halls: a large room with concert stage and a smaller room for club nights. Its G Sessions can turn the live setup into a 360-degree arrangement, with performers surrounded by the audience.
