About Französischer Dom

Französischer Dom is a 500-person concert room in Berlin’s Französische Friedrichstadtkirche, facing the Gendarmenmarkt. Its name points to the adjoining tower: “Dom” grew from the French dôme, meaning dome, while the performance space remains the church itself. That pairing gives recitals an unusually direct frame—an active Reformed church, a rebuilt Baroque interior, and a 1985 Eule organ that received a full overhaul in 2023.

A Huguenot church, broken and rebuilt

The congregation built its first dedicated church here between 1701 and 1705 for French Protestant refugees, the Huguenots. Jean Cayart began the project, and Abraham Quesnay completed it after Cayart’s death. In 1785, Frederick II commissioned the adjacent domed tower to refine the square’s appearance and placed it at the congregation’s disposal; that addition supplied the name Französischer Dom. An air raid destroyed the church in 1944. Reconstruction ran from 1978 to 1983, returning the building to worship, community work and church music. The present organ followed during that rebuilding era: Hermann Eule Orgelbau received the commission in the early 1980s, creating an instrument whose French-Baroque character suits the room’s core repertoire.

What the room offers now

Church music leads the program, especially organ recitals, with invited players from Berlin and abroad; the venue also hosts concerts presented by outside organisers. The French Church rents the space for concerts, readings, conferences and celebrations, so a calendar can move between devotional music and formal event productions. For audiences, the practical scale is intimate by central-Berlin landmark standards: the principal hall holds up to 500, spans 720 square metres, rises to 20 metres, and includes an integrated stage and audio system. On-site catering is available for event formats.
