Frannz Club

Frannz Club in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg is a 201–500-capacity concert room inside the Kulturbrauerei complex. Its distinguishing feature is the setting: the club occupies the former Schultheiss brewery’s restoration building, combining a stage-and-bar room with a restaurant and courtyard beer garden. A gig here comes framed by an industrial brick complex whose brewing operation ended in 1967 and whose spaces now support a dense cultural programme.

A youth-club return

In 1970, the district opened Jugendclub Erich Franz in the brewery’s former administrative building. Known as Franz-Club, it quickly drew Berlin night crowds. The club closed in August 1997 amid the Kulturbrauerei’s redevelopment. In September 2004, operators associated with Alte Kantine and Die Schöne Party reopened the site as Frannz, pairing a restaurant with a club. The added “n” marked a new operation, while the setting remained part of the brewery’s old social spaces. Tagesspiegel described the earlier Franz-Club as a centre for blues, rock and alternative culture, a useful clue to the musical lineage behind the current venue.

The room in practice

Frannz books broadly across concert music and events, with blues, pop and rock listed by the German Music Information Centre; official venue material also names parties, improv theatre, quizzes, dance classes, public viewings and readings. For showgoers, the relevant geometry is simple: the Club has the stage and a long wooden bar, while the adjacent Ausschank has high arched windows, old wooden floors and access to the courtyard beer garden. Four rooms span 700 square metres and can be hired separately or together, so the feel changes substantially from one event to the next.
