About Bulbul

Bulbul is a roughly 200-person room in Berlin’s Kreuzberg, at Skalitzer Straße 114. Its calling card is the old “Farbfernseher ab 98,- DM” sign above the entrance: Bulbul occupies the same premises as Farbfernseher, a former television shop turned dancefloor. The capacity is an estimate carried from a 200-person listing for the previous club in these rooms, so expect a compact, shoulder-close show or DJ night instead of a large hall.

A Television Shop’s Second Life

Farbfernseher opened here in 2009 when Jan Baumann and two partners—two architects and a graphic designer—made a bar with a dancefloor from the television store. Their early setup put the DJ booth beside the first-floor bar; moving decks downstairs pushed the space toward a full club, with house and disco-leaning bookings. In March 2019, Baumann said the landlord planned renovations and a new lease, ending the ten-year run at the close of May. The farewell, Sendeschluss, began May 25 and ran 24 hours across two floors, with Syncom Data and Philipp Otterbach among the billed DJs. In September, café operator Nidal Bulbul and artist Mudar El-Sheich-Ahmed took on the empty site; Bulbul’s opening party followed on September 7, 2019.

Bar First, Dancefloor After Dark

Bulbul operates as a bar during the week and puts its floor into club use on weekends. Its booking mix centres house, disco, minimal, funk and soul with local and international DJs; listings also point to electronic, techno, Arabic-influenced and Afro/tribal strands, plus small concerts, exhibitions and open drum sessions. The practical setup is a bar-led microclub with a compact dancefloor. Berlin.de lists limited accessibility, a useful consideration for anyone planning a full night inside.
