About Berliner Dom

Berliner Dom in central Berlin is a 1,390-seat concert setting inside Germany’s largest Evangelical church. Its music programme brings roughly 100 concerts and events each year beneath a dome that rises 98 metres above the city. Organ recitals, choral programmes and large sacred works gain their character from a full-scale church interior: this is a room where architecture forms part of the performance.

A church rebuilt for a reunited city

The Dom’s lineage reaches to 1465, when St Erasmus Chapel on Spree Island became a collegiate church. The present building came later: Kaiser Wilhelm II commissioned architect Julius Carl Raschdorff after the earlier church was demolished in 1893, and the new Dom opened on 27 February 1905. Its defining rupture arrived on 24 May 1944, when a bomb struck the dome lantern and fire tore through the outer dome; by war’s end, a quarter of the cathedral lay destroyed. Reconstruction restored the exterior by 1984, while interior work continued until the re-inauguration service of 6 June 1993. A concert here carries that history in plain view: imperial scale, wartime damage and a long East Berlin rebuilding project converge in one functioning room.

What the concert experience offers

Programming centres on church music: organ repertoire, choirs, sacred vocal works and classical concerts, alongside music within services. The cathedral presents its own choir and organist, while the adjoining Tauf- und Traukirche hosts smaller-format events such as chamber concerts. Seating spreads across the cathedral in price zones; the official plan marks seats with restricted views and identifies the strongest reception for hearing-loop users. Barrier-free entry sits beside the main portal. Choose seats by the plan when sightlines matter, then let the building’s scale do the rest.
