About Berghain / Panorama Bar

Berghain / Panorama Bar in Berlin is a 1,500-capacity electronic-music complex in the former Friedrichshain heat-and-power plant. Its defining physical trick is unusually literal: the main Berghain floor occupies the old machine hall under 18-metre ceilings, while Panorama Bar occupies the former control room upstairs. That split gives a single night two sharply drawn settings—an enormous concrete room below and a windowed upper floor oriented toward the sunrise.

A power station finds its second life

The building rose between 1952 and 1955 to supply the new Stalinallee housing district with heat and electricity. It left service in 1988; demolition work in 2002 cleared the way for a conversion completed in 2004, with the former turbine and generator space becoming the dance floor. Berghain’s operators had already established Ostgut in 1998, in a warehouse on a rail-yard site. That club closed in 2003 as the area was cleared and redeveloped, including the multipurpose arena by Ostbahnhof. Founders Michael Teufele and Norbert Thormann then carried the project into the power plant: Panorama Bar opened in October 2004, followed by the main Berghain room in December.

How the rooms work now

Programming follows the architecture. Berghain concentrates on forceful techno from international DJs and Berlin residents; Panorama Bar favors house, with its large windows shifting the room’s character as morning arrives. Ground-floor Säule handles smaller, darker and more experimental sets. Elsewhere on the site, Halle am Berghain stages concerts and exhibitions, while Kantine hosts smaller concerts, readings and events. The venue’s programme separates Club, Halle and Kantine listings. Entry relies on a selective door policy intended to shape a diverse, respectful dance floor, and photography is prohibited. Expect industrial scale downstairs, a bar behind a glass wall, and a DJ booth kept low and visually secondary to the room.
