Beate Uwe

Beate Uwe is a 260-capacity club in Berlin-Mitte, a few steps from Alexanderplatz, operating inside a former post office on Schillingstraße. Its calling card is unusually domestic for a dance venue: records hang from the ceiling, carpets define the room, and the dance floor sits alongside a salon-like retreat. The programming centers electronic dance music, with house and downtempo at its core, in a compact ground-floor space made for close-range DJ sets and collective parties.

A post office gets a dance floor

Sam Ücel and Javid Ansar found their space at the former post office in 2014, after a long search for a place to build something of their own. Ücel had arrived in Berlin in 2002 and met restaurateur Ansar through shared projects; Beate Uwe became the pair’s club project at Schillingstraße 31. The building itself dates to 1979, a DDR-era prefabricated structure whose low-rise, utilitarian exterior gives little warning of the club within. The venue’s early identity came from a floor and a 1970s-style chill-out room, while the name carried a playful everyday quality: two friends of Ücel also happened to be called Beate and Uwe. Berlin’s Senate recognized the club with Tag der Clubkultur awards in 2020 and 2021, a useful marker of how a small independent room secured a place in the city’s club ecosystem.

How the weekend works

Beate Uwe is geared toward DJs, labels and artist collectives. Fridays and Saturdays host collective nights and curated label or crew showcases, with house and its groove-led offshoots prominent; Sundays shift toward downtempo, carpets, and opening slots reserved for newcomers. Expect one main bar and dance floor, plus a separate salon that can carry a second bar, a smoking lounge and a covered outdoor area. The entire venue sits at ground level with step-free access and accessible toilets. House rules set a 21+ entry threshold, prohibit photos and video, and place trained door staff at the center of its awareness approach.
