Bar jeder Vernunft

Bar jeder Vernunft is a 200–250-seat theatre in Berlin’s Wilmersdorf district, staged inside a 1912 Art Nouveau Spiegelzelt, or mirror tent. Built as a Dutch Danse Palais for seaside dance venues, the tent brings candlelit tables, red velvet and mirror-lined walls to shows built for close-range attention. The scale suits performers whose words, arrangements and stage persona carry as much weight as sheer volume.

A dance tent becomes a Berlin stage

The building’s journey supplies the venue’s defining story. Its mirror tent began life in 1912 as a seasonal ballroom in Flanders and the Netherlands, appeared at Antwerp’s 1920 world exhibition, then spent time as a potato store before Swiss producer Ueli Hirzel acquired it in the early 1980s. In 1992, Hirzel passed the tent to Holger Klotzbach and Lutz Deisinger, who founded Bar jeder Vernunft on the parking deck beside what is now the Berliner Festspiele.

Its first major breakthrough came in 1994–95 with the venue’s independent production of the operetta Im weißen Rößl am Wolfgangsee, featuring Max Raabe and Die Geschwister Pfister alongside Meret Becker, Otto Sander and others. That production gave the young theatre nationwide visibility and established the mix of musical theatre, cabaret and personality-driven performance that still defines its programming.

The room today

This is a curated theatre bill: Franziska Keßler and co-founder Lutz Deisinger lead artistic planning, while the programme centers chanson, music cabaret, comedy, variety, musical shows and occasional singer-songwriter, swing and a cappella nights. Seating runs from tables in the round to boxes, with food and drinks served during the evening; a beer garden extends the social side in summer. Expect a polished supper-club setting, with sightlines and atmosphere designed around the stage instead of a standing concert floor.
