Ballhaus Spandau

Ballhaus Spandau is a Berlin dance-and-concert club in Tiefwerder, with capacity unpublished; its calling card is a continuous address. It has operated as a rock discotheque on Dorfstraße 5 since 1971, in a listed former ballroom whose dance use reaches back to the nineteenth century. Ballhaus began as Ballhaus Tiefwerder: a hall built around 1891, followed shortly by front rental housing, forming the listed building at Dorfstraße 5. A 1996 Berliner Zeitung report described a huge dance hall and a retained old bar, evidence that ballroom fabric remained visible as the music changed.

One piece of cross-border music history anchors the room’s reputation: East German band City made its first West German appearance here. A second story is closer to a collision on the dancefloor: Tagesspiegel places Bela B. and Farin Urlaub’s meeting here around 1980 or 1981, before Die Ärzte formed. The date stays fuzzy; the Dorfstraße 5 setting is firm, placing the room in the band’s early Spandau geography.
