Astra Kulturhaus

Astra Kulturhaus is a 1,500-capacity concert hall and club in Berlin-Friedrichshain, built inside the former Kulturhaus of the DDR Reichsbahn on the RAW grounds. That provenance is visible in a room that leans into East German design: parquet flooring, several bars and a sizeable beer garden surround a full-scale live-music setup. It suits gigs that need momentum and crowd density, while retaining the informal texture of a club night.

A railway workers’ culture house becomes a concert room

Astra opened in April 2009, converting the former DDR Reichsbahn culture house into a home for concerts and parties. The building’s earlier role supplied the venue with its most distinctive feature: a civic-scale hall from the railway era, recast for amplified music instead of workplace social life. Its in-house photo archive records Beirut on August 18, 2009, during the first summer of operation; Vampire Weekend followed on February 19, 2010. Those dates establish Astra’s early position as a room able to host touring international acts alongside its party calendar. The archive also shows the programming’s broad reach through later bills for George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic in 2014, Warpaint in 2016 and Vulfpeck in 2017. Astra’s story therefore rests less on a single genre than on a durable format: a large standing hall where a concert booking and a late party can share the same infrastructure.

The room now

Astra’s booking policy accommodates rentals through its dedicated booking contact, while the public program moves across concert and club formats. Rock, indie, pop, electronic music, punk and rap all fit the recent shape of its calendar; Berlin’s official club guide likewise describes the music as event-dependent and notes recurring party series. Expect a standing-room feel, parquet underfoot, several points for drinks and an outdoor beer garden. The venue is fully step-free, with a wheelchair platform, accessible toilet and accessible parking provision.
