Arcanoa

Arcanoa is a roughly 30-capacity basement music bar in Berlin-Kreuzberg, its small stage set amid an interior whose signature feature is a watercourse running through the counter. The room puts performers close to listeners and preserves an unusually handmade visual language: recycled stone, steelwork and mosaic details descended from its first incarnation. Its programme makes space for musicians, poets and folk-session regulars alongside compact live bills.

A move that carried the room’s materials with it

Arcanoa began on August 8, 1988, conceived and built by two women using recycled materials; artists including the Dead Chickens helped shape the original interior. A 1998 taz report described the old Zossener Straße site as a three-room art pub built around steel structures, a water grotto and a counter made from discarded gravestones. It also recorded the precarious end: owner Petra Franke had fought administrative pressure following police raids, while conflicts with a tenant and authorities accompanied the decision against renewing the lease; the venue was scheduled to close at the end of July. A house sale forced the move that year. Arcanoa then reopened near the former location on Am Tempelhofer Berg, rebuilding elements such as the flowing-bar counter and iron constructions from old and new materials.

Built for participation

Arcanoa’s stated policy centers independent music authors and original performances. Regular live sets run Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; open sessions shape the weekly rhythm through singer-songwriter Mondays, medieval-music Wednesdays and a multicultural folk session on Thursdays. Expect a basement-pub layout with a small stage and close quarters, plus room details that reward a pause between sets: the counter’s water channel, steel structures and mosaics. Readings, short films and a summer beer garden broaden the setting around the music.
