About A-Trane

A-Trane is a roughly 100-capacity jazz club in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, a short walk from Savignyplatz. Its defining feature is the room itself: founder Ralf Rudolph built it using a room-within-a-room construction, with sound isolation, quiet ventilation and acoustics planned at structural level. That engineering gives the small club an unusually focused listening environment, with audience members gathered close to the bandstand. The name joins John Coltrane’s “Trane” with “Take the A Train.”

A former potato shop turned listening room

The story began with a disused potato shop at the Bleibtreustraße/Pestalozzistraße corner. Rudolph converted the ground-floor space into a jazz club, following a building application filed in September 1989 and approved on November 2, 1990. A-Trane opened on September 11, 1992; its opening run featured the New Berlin Jazz Quintet, including a young Till Brönner, across four weekends. The detail matters because the club arrived as a purpose-built room, conceived around studio-quality sound instead of adapted as an afterthought.

Sedal Sardan took over in 1997 after Rudolph sought a successor. Sardan, previously a designer, illustrator and professional basketball player, became the club’s owner-manager and regular master of ceremonies. In 2011, A-Trane received the Live Entertainment Award for Best German Jazz Club, a formal marker of the work’s reach beyond its small floorplan.

What the room gives you now

The calendar centers modern, cool, contemporary and avant-garde jazz, with fusion, soul and R&B also in the mix; the club presents concerts on almost every evening and keeps a Monday Andreas Schmidt & Friends session as a low-barrier introduction. Expect seated listening around a compact stage, plus limited standing room when the room fills. Full air-conditioning, dedicated light and sound systems, and an in-house recording studio underline the venue’s musician-first setup. The club also appears regularly in JazzFest Berlin programming.
