Sam's Town Point

Sam’s Town Point is an 80-capacity South Austin music bar whose footprint spreads beyond its modest indoor room: the property carries stages inside and outside. Dating to 1981, it pairs a close-up bandstand with a dance-oriented crowd, so a concert can feel like a bar set, a two-step, and a backyard gathering at once. Its wooded setting near the city’s southern edge also separates the experience from downtown club hopping.

A family bar’s changing of hands

Penny Grossman and her family ran Sam’s Town Point as a working-class neighborhood joint from 1981. The venue began as a beer joint and private music club beyond Austin’s city limits; a 2007 boundary change placed it within Austin while preserving its far-south setting and local-music focus.

In 2011, Wally Grossman died in a motorcycle accident. Songwriter Ramsay Midwood, who had found the club in 2002 and became a regular performer and booker, stepped into a larger role afterward. Grossman made Midwood co-owner in 2017; after repairs and expansion, she deeded him the four-acre property. The handoff carried the business through a difficult family moment, with Grossman continuing as a visible presence at her reserved barstool.

The room and the rhythm

Booking favors country and roots forms: honky-tonk, Western swing, blues, rockabilly, and country soul, with room for folk and rock bills. Live music runs nightly, and Monday’s recurring Steel Monday centers pedal-steel players. Inside, a stage anchors one end of the intimate room, a long bar runs along one side, and the dance floor occupies the rear. The outdoor stage gives larger or fair-weather shows a second focal point.
