About Radio Coffee & Beer (South)
Radio Coffee & Beer (South) is an Austin room with a listed capacity of 100, where a coffeehouse, craft-beer bar, and live-music stop share a renovated 1940s house and a large patio. Its clearest musical calling card is Monday Bluegrass Night, an ongoing outdoor residency. Local and touring artists join the calendar, with the setting geared toward picnic-table viewing, food trucks, and an easygoing crowd using the grounds as both gathering place and listening room.
A flower market becomes a music stop
Radio began in June 2014, when Austin musician Jack Wilson and his father, Greg Wilson, opened the Menchaca Road location after renovating a 1940s house. The building had previously housed Cliff Fort’s Flower Market. Early coverage recorded reclaimed-wood floors, high ceilings, and natural light inside, while the founders’ plan paired occasional outdoor sets by local and touring groups with quieter weekday performances on an intimate indoor stage. Bluegrass Night also arrived as part of that opening-era program, continuing a tradition Wilson knew through former Flipnotics colleagues. In 2023, the company added Radio/East, a nearly two-acre sibling venue with three stages, leaving South as the original Radio site.
The room today
Radio South takes live-music booking submissions through its South booking form, supporting a flexible neighborhood program that includes bluegrass, local and touring musicians, trivia, outdoor cinema, and other events. Folk, country, indie, electronic, jazz, and alternative all fit the bill. For concerts, the main draw is the expansive outdoor patio: picnic tables face the outdoor stage, with food trucks and a beer-garden setup close at hand. Coffee, craft beer, wine, and cocktails keep the venue useful from daytime hangs through late sets.
