Mozart's Coffee Roasters

Mozart’s Coffee Roasters is a lakeside Austin coffeehouse that also works as a compact live-music room, with its Upper Deck fitting up to 250 guests. The distinguishing feature is the setting: performance space runs across semi-covered outdoor seating above Lake Austin, while the property also includes a loft with a stage and piano. Shows arrive with coffee, baked goods, and water views built into the experience, creating a casual setting for close-range sets.

Built for the lake, then the stage

Mozart’s opened in 1993, founded by four local couples who drew inspiration from the specialty-coffee scenes of Southern California and Seattle. Co-founder Ken Leonard describes its original formula as bakery, coffee, and place; roasting and baking have happened on site since opening. The building had been designed as a boat repair shop, and reclaimed Chicago brick gave the waterfront structure its older-looking exterior. That nautical history still makes sense of the broad decks and boathouse-like footprint.

Music has been part of Mozart’s programming since day one, Leonard told Edible Austin, with performers sharing the property alongside makers, comedians, and other creatives. A substantial room change followed in 2023, when the café opened an indoor Loft area with a stage for live jazz, adding an inside option to a venue shaped chiefly by decks and the lakefront. The result is a coffeehouse whose performance identity grew from its original social-space mission instead of a separate concert-hall conversion.

How the room works now

The calendar leans toward jazz, folk, indie, R&B, pop, classical, and country, with a clear lane for local players. Mozart’s maintains a regular musician roster through a submission process, while its Tuesday Late at the Lake open mic brings singer-songwriters, poets, and professional musicians to the deck. Original songs receive sign-up priority; performers get one five-to-six-minute slot, acts are limited to trios, and backing tracks are excluded. For audience members, expect flexible seating across the deck spaces, plus the loft’s stage-and-piano setup indoors.
