Mohawk

Mohawk is a 900-capacity live-music venue and bar in Austin’s Red River Cultural District. Opened in 2006, it splits its action between indoor and outdoor stages, with three bars and a roof deck spread through a compact, multi-level setup. The outdoor room’s upper tiers are the house advantage: Mohawk itself recommends arriving early for the elevated view and sound, making the place especially suited to fans who want an alternative to the floor crush.

A 2006 conversion, then a return

James Patrick “Jim” Moody bought, renovated, and reopened the building as Mohawk in 2006, creating a venue with indoor and outdoor stages on a street already central to Austin’s club life. Mohawk’s own account dates the venue’s opening to that year and frames its operating principle as welcoming artists, staff, and audiences across genres.

Its clearest recent turning point arrived after the pandemic shutdown. On May 27, 2021, Mohawk reopened after 442 days without live shows, staging a sold-out bill led by Heartless Bastards with The Tender Things. KUT reported that 450 people came through for the first in-person show, while the Austin Chronicle described owner James Moody and staff greeting a mostly full room after the long closure. That night gave the venue a concrete restart, with live sound and a full bar returning together.

The room today

Mohawk books national, regional, and local acts year-round, asking local artists for music links, live video, recent market history, and availability. Its calendar can accommodate indie and alternative rock, metal, hip-hop, and electronic music, alongside pop and Latin bills. Expect general-admission, standing-room-only shows. The two-stage design offers a choice of indoor immediacy or an outdoor crowd with tiered sightlines; three bars—indoor, patio, and roof deck—help keep breaks between sets close at hand.
